I'm against the third recommendation. There is currently no Dean for
Undergraduate Education, and whether there will be one is not yet known.
Academic computing is vital, is working extremely well, and benefits, I
think, from its current reporting structure.

I'd also be hesitant on the oter two, though these are themselves fairly
modest recommendations and perhaps should go forward. We don't know yet
what mix of librarianship, information service, academic (educational
and research) will serve us best because all these areas are changing
rapidly. The big mistake, I think, is to restructure things before we
or any one else has the answers. My own view, derived in part from
consulting very widely on the Library Director search is that the
functions of the library are fundamental and permanent and therefore
need clear boundaries as well as good working collaborative
relationships with departments, labs interested in library projects,
i.s., etc. My vote is for not conflating our concern with education via
advanced technologies with either the libraries (for now), or with the
office of the dean for undergraduate education (probably ever).
