4. Oversight
Information technology will be an increasingly central influence in
helping to define MIT's educational agenda. Consequently, Faculty
oversight of educational technology priotities and operations becomes
increasingly crucial. We recommend that Academic Computing, distance
learning, and other issues discussed in this report be brought under
the purview of a Standing Committee of the Faculty. This could be
accomplished either by expanding the charge of an existing committee
(for example, recasting the "Committee on the Library System" as the
"Committee on Library and Information Systems") or by establishing a
new standing committee. In either case, a motion should be brought
before the Faculty next fall to amend the Rules and Regulations of the
Faculty to reflect this change.
